I’m currently rehearsing with my friend Catherine Campbell on her latest cabaret show for the Adelaide Fringe Festival, ‘Made in Australia‘.
Catherine and I have worked together for a number of years – most often on ‘My Blue Angel – Dreaming of Dietrich’ which I’ve written about before. In recent Fringe Festivals we have performed ‘Around the World in 80 Bars’ and ‘Catherine Campbell’s Cabaret Variety Hour’ (pretty sure I got that title wrong).
‘Made in Australia’ follows on from a collection of songs Catherine and I presented at a Sunday Spectrum concert at the Festival Centre last year. The basic premise is that it is a cabaret show populated solely with songs by Australian composers or songs performed by Aussie artists.
The blurb as it appears on the Fringe Festival website…
Avoid the cabaret cliche and immerse yourself in songs that reflect the issues and stories that are part of our culture! Some social satire, some hauntingly beautiful melodies and some solid rock! Songs by Australian songwriters, including Sean Peter, Paul Kelly, Eddie Perfect, Casey Benetto (KEATING!), Pat Rix and others…
Join two of Adelaide’s favourite cabaret performers and celebrate the crazy melting pot that is Australia in an eclectic blend of contemporary Australian songwriters and cabaret classics. These are the songs and stories that make us who we are, explore where we’ve come from and maybe give us a bit of a road map as to where the #@*! we might be headed next.
Performance dates and booking details can be found here.
A quick plug for another show that Catherine is performing in during the Fringe – ‘Tomfoolery‘.
