Flat on your Bacharach at the Hong Kong Fringe Club
We flew into Hong Kong last night and went straight to our accommodation. I’m staying at mid-level, quite next to the world’s longest escalator which I got to ride on this morning as I walked to the Fringe Club. Having never been to Hong Kong before I’m learning about the city as I go. I left the hotel with plenty of time to spare this morning, not sure how long it would take me to reach my destination. I used the extra time to walk around the Central area.
After being introduced to Catherine, Jackie and Jaqueline at the Fringe Club, we headed out to Radio 3 at RTHK for an interview with host Phil Whelan. We ended up also talking to Jonathan Douglas at Radio 4. The interviews went well and were especially fun since it was the first time Johanna had done an interview with us and she fit in really well.
Then back to the Fringe Club where we had a delicious vegetarian lunch and met with some more of the team there who were setting up sound and lighting in the theatre where we’ll perform. While they were doing that there wasn’t much for us to do at the venue, so we took it upon ourselves to hit the streets and explore.
I discovered that Jo is quite the shopper and before too long she’d bought a new pair of shoes at a shop that was having a new sort of sale.
We also walked up and down some small market areas set up in narrow laneways that run perpendicular to the main streets. These really sum up my experience of day 1 in Hong Kong. Around the corner from a western designer fashion store I’d discover a market stall that sold fresh fish. Very fresh. The sort that is still swimming until a minute before you carry it away from the stall. Tomorrow we’ll have a tech rehearsal at the Fringe Club to make sure everything’s organised and running smoothly before opening night on Thursday.
