Stephen Sondheim – In Conversation

By Matthew Carey

I was pointed towards the stageandscreenonline.com website this week, where they feature the transcript of an interview with Stephen Sondheim from May 2006. This must have coincided with Sondheim’s visit to London to work with the team that took ‘Sunday in the Park with George’ to the West End.

It was my great pleasure to be the Associate Musical Director of the initial run of that London revival production, rehearsing with the team and then playing for the first twelve weeks that it played at the Menier Chocolate Factory in Southwark.

The show was such a success in the 160 seat Menier theatre that it was transferred to the Wyndham’s Theatre stage in the West End a few months later. I was able to return to London that July to see how the show had developed and to play in the pit for a few performances.

I’m thrilled that the same production will be seen in New York from January 2008 and that it looks as though I’ll get to see it there as well. Playbill just announced the New York cast – the names that I’m familiar with suggest that there will be an incredible line up of talent on that stage.

Have a read of the interview. I found Sondheim’s thoughts on the recent revivals of his work, particularly the smaller, chamber style productions.
